Jokowi Invites Singaporeans to Reside in Indonesia’s New Capital

Indonesian President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the 2023 Ecosperity Week in Singapore offered Singapore citizens to live in Indonesia’s new capital city or IKN Nusantara in East Kalimantan.

The forum is attended by global business leaders, policymakers, investors, and civil society from various industries to discuss transformational climate action.

Jokowi alluded to rising house prices in Singapore. “I also know that house prices here have risen very high. Maybe living in Nusantara can become an option,” he said as broadcast via the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube in Jakarta, Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

He assured investors that the construction of the new capital is underway. The development of basic infrastructure, such as roads and drinking water supply, as well as the central government area, will be completed in 2024 using the state budget.

“For the private sector for the early phase, we have prepared 300 investment packages with a total value of US$2.6 billion in various fields, housing, transportation, energy, technology, and others,” he said.

He also assured that whoever the President is elected in the 2024 election, investment in the new capital project will remain safe. He promoted the new capital as a comfortable city surrounded by nature to live in and do business. 65 percent of the city is forest area, he informed.
